There’s nothing that comes between friends…except lovers it would seem as best pals Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) try to give their failing love lives a jump start. What starts as friendly rivalry soon ends up with the pals raging at each other in jealously according to Emmerdale’s Dominic Brunt.
After failing (understandably) to get back with his ex-wife Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), Paddy is on the look out for a new romance. Meanwhile his partner-in-crime Marlon is feeling the same, after being left by Carly Hope (Gemma Atkinson) for her former flame.
Its starts when Paddy and Marlon discover a new dating app… “Oh it’s quite tragic,” Dominic tells Inside Soap magazine. “Paddy doesn’t get anyone swiping right on him, poor fella.” Meanwhile Marlon tells his mate he’s had 15 people swipe on him straight away and the healthy competition soon turns sour when Paddy lies that he’s had more – and is soon found out.
After humiliating him, Marlon does set Paddy up on a date…with serial romantic disaster Bernice Blackstock (Samantha Giles), although neither of them realise it is an actual date!
“Bernice is told that Paddy needs therapy and he’s told that Bernice is interested in horses. Neither of them realise they’re being set up on a date, which makes for some entertaining scenes. I’m a massive fan of Samantha Giles, so it was great fun to film.
“I used to work with Sam quite a bit years ago, but we haven’t for a while. It always makes me nervous, working with someone I haven’t been with for ages. I try and up my game! It’s a really funny scene though.”
We won’t need to buy a hat just yet as the ‘date’ doesn’t quite go to plan but things then look up when Paddy catches the eye of Marlon’s attractive date Lindsey.
“She’s attractive, so Paddy says there’s bound to be something wrong with her,” explains Dominic. “Things don’t work out with her and Marlon, so Paddy gloats when he gets her number and he feels justified because Marlon’s ribbed him. Lindsey walks out on Marlon and she thinks, ‘I’m here anyway. I’ll go for a meal with Paddy!’”
“However, when she finds out there’s a competition between Marlon and Paddy and she takes umbrage. She’s so angry that she seeks revenge.”
After so many years together, we hope this won’t come between our favourite couple Paddy and Marlon. “It’s a bit of fun and they both see it as a ridiculous situation,” adds Dominic.
“I love working with Mark, and I love Paddy and Marlon’s scenes. I think when you spend more time with someone than your own family or your own wife, as I sometimes do with Mark, you have to get on with each other and enjoy yourself.”
While Dominic celebrates 20 years on Emmerdale this year, he is also celebrating rave reviews for his latest satirical horror film.
“It’s called Attack of the Adult Babies and Sally Dexter, who plays Faith Dingle, is in it,” adds Dominic. “She’s amazing. The film’s going to be distributed worldwide, too. It’s a kind of holiday comedy with lots of fat men running around a manor house in nappies.
“It will be out in the UK this winter and then it will come out on DVD.”
