Hollywood actor Michael Wildman, who has starred in films such as The Bourne Ultimatum and the Steven Spielberg sci-fi film Ready Player One, is joining Emmerdale as Ellis’ dad Al Chapman.

Michael, who starred in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as centaur Magorian, will play the dad of Jessie Dingle’s youngest son and is set to arrive in August.

Jessie married Al shortly after her first husband died and they parted on bad terms as she was still in love with her late husband. Since arriving in Emmerdale, Jessie (Sandra Marvin) has married chef Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) so the surprise arrival of her ex-husband is set to ruffle feathers in the village.

Michael said: “I’m seriously looking forward to joining the Emmerdale family. On paper Al Chapman will be a dream to play for any actor and with the help of the current cast I look forward to him mixing things up in the village and for myself, bringing him to life.

The role will see Michael Wildman reunited with actor Asan N’Jie, who plays Ellis, as the two co-starred in Ready Player One together.

Teasing the forthcoming summer storyline around Ellis, Emmerdale said that Ellis receives an unwelcome blast from the past who is not only going to stir trouble for him, but the whole village when they decide to stick around.

Series Producer Jane Hudson said at the recent press event: “We’ve got a new character joining the show – Al. He is going to bring back some memories for Ellis and cause a bit of trouble and be very much in everybody’s way.”

While Ellis won’t be pleased to see his dad, Michael’s mother is thrilled at his new role. Michael explained: “I don’t know who’s more excited about me joining Emmerdale, myself or my Mum!  I know it’s her, and was my late grandmother’s, favourite soap.

“I mean I’ve rubbed some serious shoulders in the business over the last 25 years, but the jump for joy from her was unmatched!”

Michael, who lives in Oxfordshire with his actress partner Ceri Ann Gregory and their five year-old son, has appeared in a soap before spending a year playing Marc Mackenzie in Family Affairs. He also appeared in Ricky Gervais’s Extras alongside Samuel L Jackson.
