Emmerdale’s Robert Sudgen’s Very Last Interview!!
Things go from bad to worse for Emmerdale’s Robert Sugden when he finds out he’s facing a murder charge. Actor Ryan Hawley explains more in his final interview.
It will be a sad day in soapland, not just Emmerdale, when one half of the biggest and most powerful soap couples in history leaves Emmerdale as Robron comes to an emotional and dramatic end. As actor Ryan Hawley departs, his on-screen alter ego Robert Sugden finds himself on a murder charge.
As Robert and Aaron go on the run (but for how long), Ryan Hawley gives his final Emmerdale interview and reminisces on his highlights while working in the Dales.
How are things for Robert at this stage?
“Robert’s obviously very sad he’s going to be going to prison for some amount of time, we don’t know how long for but it’s always in the back of his mind. Everytime he and Aaron try to enjoy themselves and try to enjoy what time they have left together, he’s always got that weight over his shoulders knowing that the sentencing is coming up and that means that he is going to be going to prison. He’s waiting for the inevitable. He is however, optimistic that it is going to only be a short amount of time that he’s going to be away for. I believe, worst case scenario – only a couple of years. He is quite confident in the fact that he has pled guilty so sentencing will be a bit more lenient.”
What’s Robert’s initial reaction when he discovers that Lee has died?
“It’s shocking, it comes out of nowhere. Victoria comes and says Lee has died and they very quickly start to process what the implications will mean for Robert’s sentencing. He’s pled guilty already to GBH with intent, section 18, which will inevitably mean he will now be guilty or he thinks he will be found guilty for the murder of Lee Posner. Everything very quickly escalates and it leads to Aaron and Robert making a very rash decision which is to leave the village fast and for good.”
Why do they decide to go on the run?
“Robert very quickly realises he is in a lot of trouble and this is going to change everything. He is going to be going away to prison for a much longer time than they had thought and he had accepted. So Liv suggests the only option they have is to leave and the decision is made. Robert is initially reluctant for Aaron to join him, but Aaron says there is no way you are leaving without me so he reluctantly accepts that. He knows he has to go and it has to be quick.”
Do they have a real plan? Do they truly believe they’ll be able to stay on the run?
“The news has just been broken to them so they haven’t really got a plan, they are going to have to take it as it comes. It means some very emotional goodbyes to some people in the village, but they have to be quick and there are some people they don’t even get the chance to because there just isn’t time. The police are literally on their way so they have to be fast and quickly make it out of the village. They really believe they are going to stay on the run and make it work. There were very emotional goodbyes with a real sense of urgency.”
And you will be saying goodbye for real?
“I will miss the show massively, it has been a huge part of my life for the last few years. I love working here, I love the people that I work with and it’s going to be very emotional leaving.”
“I was so lucky to be involved in the big crash scenes in 2016. The underwater scenes that we filmed at Pinewood studios were fantastic to do. Me and Danny (Aaron Dingle) got to have a lot of fun there swimming in a tank. There were so many special effects in the crash sequence that week, it was probably the biggest thing Emmerdale has ever done and it was amazing to be a part of it. I have been very lucky to be involved in some very ambitious stunts and storylines but that was the stand out one: everyone pulled together, we were up against the odds but I really think we managed to pull it off.”
