Yorkshire milliner Marie Flanagan has created a one-off showstopper for Emmerdale, as commissioned by costume designer Sue Sheehan, for a storyline about Kerry Wyatt’s 40th birthday celebrations.
On tonight’s episodes, Kerry’s partner Dan Spencer (Liam Fox) presents Kerry, played by Laura Norton, with what he thinks is her dream present – an avant garde outfit from a glossy magazine, which he swiped from the beauty salon.
However, Dan has sadly got it all wrong as the ideal present for her 40th is actually a handbag that was on the page opposite. She in fact said: “I wouldn’t be seen dead in that outfit” when looking at it with Bernice.
The designer outfit includes a resplendent red hat adorned with leaves, fruit and feathers that was designed by Marie and the costume designer Sue and took around a month to make. It is the first of Marie’s creations to appear on television.
Marie has been working as a milliner for twenty years and still attends courses to keep her skills updated with Rose Cory milliner by appointment to Her Majesty the Late Queen Mother.
She has recently moved from her hat salon in Lindley, Huddersfield, to her studio in Halifax where she sees clients by appointment only.
When Marie isn’t making hats for television and theatre, she works in her Halifax studio surrounded by Christian Dior mannequins, handmade silk flowers from Germany, vintage feathers from Paris, beautiful crystals and silks. All bought from the late Phillip Somerville Royal milliner by appointment to the Queen
The hat will be on display at the Emmerdale Studio Experience from the end of July. Emmerdale Studio Experience is based at the old Emmerdale studios on Burley Road, Leeds, where you can also see other costumes from the show including hats worn by legends such as Edna Birch, Seth Armstrong and Val Pollard.
Marie works by appointment only. For something that will lift the wonderful into the realms of the sublime, visit www.marieflanagan.co.uk
