Emmerdale’s Michelle Hardwick, who plays local vet Vanessa Woodfield, was the deserving winner of Actor of the Year at the Diva Awards 2019, organised by Diva Magazine. Michelle was one of eight actresses from TV, theatre, film or radio to be shortlisted in a viewer vote.

Michelle, who joined Emmerdale in 2012, was nominated alongside Miriam Margolyes, Fiona Shaw, Maisie Richardson Sellers, Liz Carr, Talisa Garcia, Genesis Lynea, and Desiree Akhavan.

As one half of #Vanity, Michelle’s character Vanessa has come to the for in Emmerdale and is now part of the show’s only lesbian relationship and one of the show’s ‘power couples’ in the fans’ eyes.

Such is the popularity of #Vanity, Emmerdale also won Storyline of the Year in the Diva Awards, which covers mainstream TV and radio dramas that often feature LGBTQI-focused storylines, helping to tell stories to people who otherwise might never come across the issues the LGBTQI community face.

Emmerdale’s romance between Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Vanessa, and their support of each other through Charity’s abuse case against DI Bails, has won them a legion of fans. Other nominees included Sally 4 Ever, Casualty, Derry Girls, Call My Agent and Ackley Bridge.

This is Michelle Hardwick’s first award and follows in the footsteps of co-star Emma Atkins who won the Best Actress nod at the 2018 British Soap Awards, TV Choice Awards, and Inside Soap Awards. Emma was also nominated for Outstanding Serial Drama Performance at the National Television Award in 2019, but sadly lost out to Eastenders’ Danny Dyer.

The Diva Awards, which celebrate lesbians and bisexual women in the UK, were held at London’s Waldorf Hilton with a glamorous black-tie dinner.
