As this chapter of the grooming storyline concluded, Maya Stepney (Louisa Clein) hoped to get a lighter sentence after confessing to exchanging inappropriate text messages with Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant). However, the judge had different ideas and sentenced her to 12months in jail.

The judge said: “Your job as a teacher placed you in the highest position of trust over the pupils in your care. Your relationship with Jacob was already compromised by the fact that you were in a serious relationship with his father.

“Rather than maintain boundaries between home and school, you betrayed your employer, your partner and the young man at the centre of this, who was 15 years old when the sexual communication took place.

“So I am in no doubt that this case passes the custody threshold and while I give credit for the guilty plea, I sentence you to 12 months immediate imprisonment.”

Thurs 20 June 2019: Maya receives her verdict.

Jacob’s loved ones were desperate for her to be punished for the rest of her crimes too – although not desperate enough for Priya (Fiona Wade) to reveal that she saw them kissing, which would have compromised the story Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) and Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) concocted about their capturing Maya on the ‘Big Night Out’.

Speaking about how Maya feels, Louisa Clein said: “She’s feeling nervous, vulnerable and anxious over what the verdict is going to be. She’s on her own and she feels a sense of doom over what the future will hold.

“Because Maya can’t quite accept that what she’s done is wrong, she can’t comprehend the possibility of a jail sentence. I suppose she’s hoping she’ll get a rap on the knuckles and she’ll start again.

“I don’t know how she’d cope in prison. It’s not a nice place to be and she wouldn’t be looked upon very favourably there. She’s not necessarily streetwise!”

The actress confirmed that Maya’s sentencing also means the end of her work at Emmerdale, even posting a picture of the personalised Tottenham football shirt the cast had signed and given her on her departure.

Louisa added: “I think people want to see the right justice for this character. People need to see that there is retribution for her. People are excited and they are interested in how it’s going to finish – or at least how this part of the story is going to end.

“I think Emmerdale have done an incredible job telling this story. People who wanted it to be over quickly and thought it was revolting have now invested in the storyline and they talk about it. It’s a talked-about story and that’s what we all set out to do.

“I feel incredibly proud of this story and that Emmerdale has tackled it, because I think it’s brave.”

However, this isn’t the end of the storyline as Jacob Gallagher continues to mourn being separated from Maya and lash out at his family, including his dad David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) with their relationship turning violent as Jacob punched him.

Will they ever be the same again? Tune into Emmerdale to find out.
