The cast and crew of Emmerdale took to the stage at the National Television Awards’ glitzy ceremony at the O2 arena in London to collect their best soap accolade.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve had heartache, sorrow, joy and new arrivals in the Dales and collecting the award on behalf of Emmerdale, actor Matthew Wolfenden said: “This (the award) proves to us you still love it. Thank you!”

Joined by producers Laura Shaw, Jane Hudson and a plethora of cast and creatives he went onto thank the shows backstage staff saying: “This is incredible! This is the forth year in a row that Emmerdale has picked up this award. We are so proud of this show and I don’t mean we the people behind me. The hundreds of people who you don’t see that make Emmerdale what it is.”

Emmerdalians had been voting in their droves for the Yorkshire soap, off the back of a week of high drama of who killed Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough), with Marlon Dingle arrested on that night’s episode. #FreeMarlon stickers were given to the waiting crowd on the red carpet while actor Mark Charnock appeared to present an award, handcuffed to a policeman.

There was heartbreak for Robron fans as Danny Miller, who plays Aaron Dingle, lost out in the Serial Drama Performance category as it eventually went to Coronation Street’s Katie McGlynn, whose heart-breaking portrayal of Sinead Tinker moved soap viewers to tears.

Also further disappointment for Emmerdalians as Jurell Carter, who plays Nate Robinson,  missed out on Newcomer award to Peter Ash from Coronation Street.

However, the evening ended on a high as the penultimate award was revealed by comedian Joel Dommett and the ‘Hedgehog’ from the Masked Singer.

Sealing a triple win for ITV soaps between Coronation Street and Emmerdale, the northern power-house triumphed. Emmerdale cast and creatives are heading back to the Dales with the coveted gong, being very much the toast of all of soap-land!
