Robert Sugden to leave Emmerdale?
Emmerdale favourite Ryan Hawley, who plays Robert Sugden – one half of the soap super couple Robron – has quit the ITV soap according to The Sun newspaper.
In an exclusive by The Sun, an ITV source said: “Emmerdale fans have loved every minute of Robron’s story, and what Ryan has brought to playing Robert. But he has decided to take a break from the show for the foreseeable future and try other projects.
“He will leave later this year, but fans can expect to see him on screen right up until the end of the year. He will be sorely missed.”
Ryan Hawley has played the popular character since 2014, becoming the fourth actor to portray Robert following Richard Smith, Christopher Smith and Karl Davies.
What started as an affair between gay mechanic Aaron and Robert, who was engaged to Chrissie White, soon became the show’s biggest and most turbulent love story. Two weddings, the second being legal, prison, shootings, and even an accidental death couldn’t keep the pair apart.
Such is the character’s popularity, Ryan has been in the centre of the soap’s biggest storylines during his tenure and was even the focus of an unusual ‘Groundhog Day’ style Christmas episode in 2017.
Ryan Hawley was a perfect on-screen match for award winning actor Danny Miller and was soon racking up nominations and award wins of his own including Inside Soap’s Best Newcomer, Best Actor at TV Choice and TRIC Awards, and Best Partnership with Danny Miller in Digital Spy Awards and Inside Soap as well as our own The Emmerdaily Birthday Honours.
Emmerdale has not commented on the news so far.
