Emmerdale has dominated this year’s Digital Spy Reader Awards winning every category except one! According to Digital Spy, over 100,000 votes were cast and it was only Coronation Street’s Pat Phelan that prevented a clean sweep of the soap categories, with Emmerdale proving a clear favourite in every other award.
With over a third of the votes, Emmerdale was crowned Best Soap for the third year running ahead of its closest rivals EastEnders, starting the (almost) clean sweep of this year’s categories.
Danny Miller, who plays Aaron Dingle, secured more than a third of the vote to defeat last year’s winner, Kieron Richardson from Hollyoaks. And there was a second award for Danny with his on/off on-screen partner Ryan Hawley, who plays Robert Sugden, as fans voted Robron their Best Soap Relationship with Coronation Street’s Rana and Kate giving them a good run for their money.
Best Soap Newcomer went to Shaun Thomas who plays Gerry Roberts. He first appeared as Lachlan’s cell mate but has soon become a firm favourite with fans, who have pleaded for him to stay away from the ill fated White family.
Ashley Thomas’ Dementia won Best Soap Storyline, for the amazing performance by John Middleton, while Natalie J Robb won Best Soap Actress for her portrayal of Moira Dingle. Funniest Soap Character went to Faith Dingle, played brilliantly by Sally Dexter.
Biggest OMG Soap Moment went to Finn Barton’s Death with the Barn Explosion from the this year’s ‘Super Soap Week’ winning Best Soap Stunt.

Despite some fans frustration at this year’s storylines, it seems Emmerdale’s winning streak continues. The shortlist of the National Television Awards will be revealed soon, and The Emmerdaily Awards will make a return in 2018 – where fans can vote for all things Emmerdale as well as new categories including Best Fan Art and Best Fan Fiction.
