Emmerdale News: Emmerdale is celebrating after taking home the trophy for Soap of the Year at this year’s TRIC Awards. Actor Ryan Hawley, who plays Robert Sugden, was also a winner, scooping the Best Soap Actor award.
More trophies were heading back to Yorkshire after Emmerdale took both of the Soap related gongs at the Television and Radio Industries Club awards or TRIC Awards as they are better known. Emmerdale won Soap of the Year while actor Ryan Hawley won the Best Soap Actor accolade.
Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) received the award with fellow cast members Samantha Giles (Bernice Blackstock), Katherine Dow Blyton (Harriet Finch), Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard), Sally Dexter (Faith Dingle) and Ryan Hawley (Robert Sugden).
Thanking Series Producers past and present, Dominic said: “For many years we’d come to these things and be spectators but in the past few years, we’ve picked up a few awards. So thanks to Iain MacLeod, Kate Oates, John Whiston and the late Gavin Blyth for dragging us into the 21st century.”
Emmerdale saw off the 2016 winners Eastenders as well as Hollyoaks and Coronation Street.
The Best Soap Actor award was won by Ryan Hawley, for his fantastic portrayal of Robert Sugden. Nominated alongside Coronation Street’s Connor McIntyre (Pat Phelan) and Lucy Fallon (Bethany Platt), Ryan thanked his fellow cast mates.
In his acceptance speech, Ryan thanked his cast mates, especially those longer serving members who had welcomed and encouraged him, saying: “I know I wouldn’t be accepting this award without any of them.”
This was the second Best Actor award won by Ryan, who joined Emmerdale nearly four years ago, having previously won the TV Choice award.
The event took place at London’s Grosvenor house in Park Lane. A silent auction was also held to raise money for chosen charities including Meningitis Now.
Other winners included This Morning, Dermot O’Leary, Doctor Foster and actress Suranne Jones, Ant and Dec, Eamonn Holmes, The Great British Bake Off, Match of the Day, Love Island, and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.
