Another heritage character is to return to Emmerdale as Lisa Riley is to bring Mandy Dingle back to the Dales for a New Year storyline in 2019.

Mandy Dingle pays a New Year visit to Emmerdale

It’s been 17 years since Emmerdale viewers last saw Mandy Dingle played by Lisa Riley. Being a Dingle and the ex wife of both Butch Dingle and Paddy Kirk, Mandy was always at the centre of high drama in the village.

This New Year viewers will be treated to the return of her character, back in the Emmerdale village for a self-contained storyline.

On her character’s return, Lisa Riley said:“I could not be happier to be returning in the New Year to Emmerdale. It’s something I never thought would happen after 17 years and I am so interested to see what trouble Mandy is capable of causing. But mostly being back with all my old friends, it’s like I’ve never been away.”

On the run up to Mandy’s return, life in the village is relatively calm. Former husband Paddy   (Dominic Brunt) moved on a long time ago and is concentrating on his relationship with Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) and partnership in the veterinary practice.

Happier times at Mandy and Paddy’s Wedding

The rest of the Dingle family are living fairly harmoniously – well as quietly as Dingles can! So what drama will be in store now this iconic member of the family is making her return?

Emmerdale’s Producer Kate Brooks said: “Iconic Mandy Dingle returns to the village carrying a secret that turns lives upside down. She’s a character bursting with fun who certainly ruffles a few feathers during her short stint back in the village, and she clearly hasn’t lost any of the joie de vivre that made Mandy so popular and enjoyable to watch. We’re delighted to welcome Lisa back to Emmerdale.”

So what could Mandy’s secret be? She left Emmerdale back in December 2000 after Paddy discovered she’d had an affair. Mandy made a brief return to the village in November 2011 to win her ex back but soon realised Paddy was happy without her as he was in a relationship with Emily Dingle, Butch’s widow.

Earlier in the year, Lisa Riley told the Express.co.uk: “People keep telling me, ‘Your Paddy needs you back!’ But in my last episodes, Mandy and Paddy spent the night together, so there could be a mini-me knocking about. I’d be so much more interested to see what their child is like – and it’d give Paddy a shock!”

If Mandy returns with a teenage son or daughter in tow, how will that affect Paddy’s relationship with Chas, especially given they just lost their own child. Guess we’ll have to wait to the New Year to find out…
